1. Why was the New York Post able to get the news of the execution of Saddam in Saturday's Midwest edition, while the NY Times could not?
2. If we support a half dozen of celebrity and gossip managzines (People, Us, Star et al.), why not a daily gossip and celebrity tabloid paper? Maybe the NY Post is right to distribute nationally. But the $1.75 price is a mistake.
3. The front page of the Tribune today, December 30, shows the touch of Bill Adee, former sports editor and now assstant editor for innovation. Instead of the traditional banner headline , the Trib's front page-- above the fold--, showed a closley cropped photo of Saddam covering most of the space and a small headline to the right. It was different and effective. Adee's display and news packaging skills, which had enlivened not only the Trib;s sports pages but the Sun Times and the late lamented National, will be most welcome on the Trib's cramped front page and boring news pages.
4. When will the Trib's Phil Rosenthal do a takeout on the Reader? The Reader is thinning before our eyes and facing threats from Craigslist, the Red Eye and Time Out Chicago. Among one of few alternative weeklies not owned but probably coveted by Village Voice Inc, the old New Times chain, the Chicago Reader has to be a great story. It's not just the mainstream media that is under assault.
5. Watch for the flood of stories about the slimming of the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday and Wednesday. Two things to keep in mind: When the Trib, The Washington Post and USA Today cut their page size, no one said anything.
Designer Mario Garcia should be asked if a tabloid WSJ would have been a better design and marketing solution.
